Business Idea

Circular Materials designs, builds and installs equipment for the treatment of industrial waste water. The technology enables the effective removal and recovery (above 98% and up to 99.9% depending on the metal) of heavy and precious metals, with a typical application in galvanic waters. Currently, these waters are treated with precipitating agents that produce sludge destined for landfill as special waste, with a huge risk of environmental pollution and high disposal costs. In contrast, Circular Materials' technology exploits the unique properties of supercritical water combined with an efficient, patented engineering design. The process utilises the injection of water at high pressure and temperature into a continuous flow of wastewater to force the quantitative precipitation of dissolved heavy metals. A particular compartment of the water phase diagram in the peri- and supercritical zone is exploited, where the water itself presents extremely atypical thermal properties that, when controlled, allow very fine process control. Through careful engineering, metals are precipitated as powders of their oxide that are easily separated and valorised (the powders can be recycled or reintroduced into the production process). The start-up allows companies to reduce the amount of metal in the waste to zero, reducing disposal costs, while also allowing it to be recovered in a recoverable form, in some cases directly in the production process, and bringing the company to zero waste of material. The systems also allow the problem to be solved locally, recovering the metal at the site where the waste is produced and allowing a circularity with an extremely small radius. The company uses an industrial partner for the construction of the plants.
