Bactory is a startup that has developed bio-synthesized metallic nanoparticles (BioNPs) with antimicrobial properties, starting from their microbial cells, to produce disinfectant and anti-fouling agents that can remove biofilms. Bacterial biofilms are viscous substances that develop mainly on surfaces in conditions of high humidity (e.g., in showers, bathtubs and washing machines), in medical devices (e.g., catheters), in industrial facilities and on ships' hulls. Microorganisms form biofilms by secreting a protective and adhesive matrix that is particularly resistant to traditional cleaning and disinfection procedures. Bactory's purification process uses sterilized BioNPs to completely eliminate bacterial cells and residues. The production of BioNPs and their purification protocols (patent pending) depend on specific bacterial strains, deploying an innovative, environmentally friendly, low-cost process. Bactory's first product will be utilized by a detergent manufacturer; experiments are also being conducted to determine its suitability for such applications as industrial paints, textile fibers and medical and dental devices.
