The Commission on Life Science met on May 9 2023 to decide the winning startup proposal for the sector.

The commission chose among ten finalists pre-selected by UniCredit Start Lab team. The Commission was composed of senior executives from leading Italian companies such as:

  • Elisabetta Capezio, Head of Business Development - Europe, Viatris
  • Maurizio Colombo, Vice Chairman, Sapio
  • Marco Ferrari, CEO, Anemocyte
  • Luca Foresti, CEO, Centro Medico Santagostino
  • Giovanni Mattoni, Head of Corporate Engineering, Zambon Group
  • Andrea Mantovani, Vice President Global Market Access Pharmaceuticals, Alira Health
  • Francesco Zaccariello, Managing Director, Atida eFarma
  •

The winning startup of the first prize for the Life Science sector is Medicilio - based in Milan - which has developed the first decentralized hospital in Italy. The company's goal is to bring high-quality diagnostic medicine directly to patients' homes, through a clear focus on technology.

The winning startup will receive a 10.000 € grant.

The Commission awarded the second prize to L.I.F.E. - from Milan - a cloud-based solution using smart sensorized garments that record patients' physiological parameters and transmit them, in real-time or delayed, to a centralized cloud, enabling telemedicine scenarios such as cardiorespiratory telemonitoring or telediagnosis, or building custom solutions for collecting and analysing data for scientific research.

The third prize went to enGenome - from Pavia - which was founded to enhance healthcare with advanced genomics. Its SaaS product eVai represents a breakthrough technology to identify disease causing variants from sequencing data. The software combines AI and bioinformatics to assess the pathogenicity of single and multiple genomic variants and drastically increases the diagnostic yield of genetic testing.

Finally, a special mentions went to Fagoterapia Lab - based in Pisa - first biotech company in Italy with the mission of saving patients' lives from antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections by using viruses that exclusively destroy the bacteria causing the infection and to PaperBox Health - from Turin - a solution for early cognitive issue identification and treatment. It includes an end-to-end pathway featuring early identification through the videogame DINO.
